This week the company Nissan recalled 322,671 Pathfinder SUVs: all affected vehicles were built between June 20, 2012 and July 27, 2016. The reason is that the lock on the hood does not close securely.

We also wrote that Airbnb banned parties forever. According to the recall documents filed by Nissan with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem is with a component called a lever crankshaft that locks and disengages the secondary hood latch.

Accumulation of dust and dirt that has not been removed from the lever can cause it to remain open, preventing the excess hood latch from properly attaching. This by itself will not cause the hood to open while the vehicle is moving, but if the main hood latch is either released at the wrong time or not properly closed, the hood may accidentally pop open.

All this can impair visibility ahead and increase the risk of an accident. Although a permanent fix has yet to be developed, this week Nissan will send notification letters to a random sample of 40,000 owners, inviting them to the dealership to inspect the affected components and, if they fail, replace them.

Every second owner will receive a different notification letter telling them to first inspect, clean and tidy up the crank arm themselves as the owner’s manual explains how to do it. Although the option to contact the dealer is still an option.

However, the end result is the same: broken levers will be replaced with fully functioning ones. When the final solution is developed and approved, Nissan will contact the owners again with more information.
