To graduate, he will be present at the same time in two different classrooms. One, physical, in the Einaudi Campus in Turin, the other totally virtual. It is precisely in the latter that the discussion of a thesis that has already entered the history of the university system will take place. Edoardo Di Pietro, 25, from Colle Val d’Elsa (Siena), is in fact the first graduate of the Metaverse in Italy. If not even in the world because, as he maintains, “the research we have done does not turn out to be precedent”. He will discuss his thesis tomorrow afternoon. “I am excited and I feel a great responsibility on my shoulders because seeing how much appreciation there is around the idea gives value to my work”, says Edoardo Di Pietro, enrolled in the master’s degree course in Communication, ICT and Media. His avatar will have a screen behind him in which he will present to the commission the slides of his thesis’ Between present and future: the impact of the Metaverse on society. Analysis and applications of the Tembo case study on Minecraft ‘.

He prepared it in a year of work. “As a gamer I had already heard of the Metaverse, also because I was unwittingly engaged in precursor games, such as Minecraft”. Tomorrow will certainly be a revolution in graduation discussions “but also for the future – he underlines – to guarantee a different distance teaching, with greater presence and greater interactivity compared to classic video calls on the platforms used to give lessons during the period of restrictions. due to the Covid pandemic “.

For the 25-year-old from Tuscany, “Metaverso is a kind of teleportation”. But there are not only merits. “The biggest flaw to point out is that we must not detach ourselves too much from reality – he says – Beautiful technology, beautiful innovation, but we always live in this world. In science fiction novels and films, or in the common imagination we see the Metaverse like that thing that will make us sit all day in the armchair with a tube attached to the back of the head, nourishing us like this. Here – he continues – the Metaverse must not even touch that idea. It must be something more to increase and simplify reality “.

The thesis supervisor will be Michele Cornetto. “The idea was born about a year and a half ago – explains the teacher – a first experiment developed on Minecraft for the Christmas party at the end of the year to overcome Covid. Since then I have started thinking of proposing this topic also to the students who they asked for thesis projects. Edoardo’s goes in this direction: it is a first, exploratory step to understand what and how many prospects there will be for the future “.
