Cybersecurity, malware Emotet in Italy points to the Pec

(ANSA) – ROME, JULY 06 – The Emotet malware, which was originally born as a banking virus and is responsible for various data theft campaigns, in Italy is now targeting Pec, the certified mail. The alarm was launched by Cert AgiD, the government structure that assists the Italian cybersecurity agency, which published a screen on Twitter on the functioning of this threat.

The alert comes after reports received regarding messages destined for Pec addresses but coming from ordinary addresses. The subject of the email is ‘Communications already passed’ contains a password protected attachment (provided by the email), if you download it, the malware infection starts. “At the moment – explains Cert AgiD – there is no evidence of Emotet campaigns distributed from Pec to Pec”.

Emotet first appeared in 2014, it was originally a banking Trojan but over time modules have been added that allow it to steal passwords stored in the victims’ software, infect other connected computers and reuse emails for subsequent spam campaigns.
