(ANSA) – MILAN, JUL 14 – TikTok is implementing a content rating system to prevent young audiences from seeing videos deemed inappropriate, along with new features that will allow viewers to customize the For You and Follow Up sections. Like the “rating” system already used for movies and video games, the rating on TikTok will organize videos based on “thematic maturity”. The platform will therefore mark the films that contain “mature or complex themes” to which it will assign a “maturity score”.
The video rating will determine whether or not TikTok viewers under 18 can view it as they scroll through their feeds. The TikTok Community Guidelines won’t change, but the way the app displays posts to certain audiences will change. “Within these strict policies, we understand that people may want to avoid certain categories of content based on their personal preferences,” said Cormac Keenan, Head of Trust and Safety at TikTok. “For members of our teen community, some content may contain mature or complex themes, which may reflect personal experiences or real-world events aimed at an older audience.” Fantasy scenes that are deemed “too scary or intense for the younger audience”, for example, will not appear on the For You pages for minors. Among other innovations, TikTok is committed to diversifying potentially problematic topics when viewed multiple times, such as diets, extreme fitness, sadness and other themes related to wellness. “We are training systems to support new languages and understand more cultures and contexts,” the company emphasizes.
