Ukrainian polar explorers at the Antarctic station “Akademik Vernadsky” renewed the historic flagpole and solemnly raised the flag of Ukraine

There are two flagpoles at the Akademik Vernadsky station – one is installed near the main building, and the other, distant, on a rock near the meteorological site.

It was on the far flagpole on February 6, 1996 during the handover of the station that the British flag was solemnly lowered and the flag of Ukraine raised.
On October 14, our polar explorers completed the repair of the flagpole, and also improved the structure for hoisting the flag. On the same day, the team of the 26th expedition symbolically raised the blue-yellow flag, which was temporarily removed for the duration of the reconstruction.
“We celebrated the holiday with a solemn raising of the flag on the renewed flagpole near the meteorological site, where the Ukrainian flag was first raised 25 years ago. Now two flags are fluttering over the station at the same time,” the polar explorers noted on Facebook.
Earlier we wrote that Ukraine bought a powerful icebreaker for polar explorers. Today he moored in Odessa. The ship can go to Antarctica by the end of this year to help Ukrainian scientists.
