The billionaire Elon Musk, boss of Tesla and SpaceX, has denied wanting to buy Manchester United after a tweet, in which he expressed the opposite intention, had made the rounds of the web. “No, it’s a joke. I have not planned to buy any sports company”, the South African businessman corrected the shot, after his initial tweet had generated almost 500,000 ‘likes’ on the social network in a few hours. In this first tweet, Musk, accustomed to unpredictable and provocative statements on Twitter, wrote: “And I’m buying Manchester United, you are welcome”. Neither Tesla nor the management of the English club, controlled by the Glazer family, had responded to this first tweet. ‘ManU’, which has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange for 10 years, has a market capitalization of $ 2.08 billion.
The stock that closed flat at $ 12.78 (+ 0.08%) on Tuesday lost 2.11% in e-commerce after the close. Although no shareholder holds a majority stake, Manchester United is controlled by the six children of American businessman Malcolm Glazer, who took over the club in 2005.
