Scientists have modeled the effects of nuclear war on Earth

What will happen to the Earth in the event of a nuclear war? The new study is modeling the impact on our planet. The results are predictably bleak

The earliest models of nuclear war in the 1980s predicted a nuclear winterwhen smoke from explosions and subsequent fires blocked the sun and its heat.

New results indicate that environmental damage can be more seriousthan previous studies have shown. The earth can completely lose the ozone layer due to heating of the stratosphere.

The team analyzed the impact of both regional and global nuclear war.

The researchers found that a global war would lead to an average of 75 percent loss of the ozone layer over 15 years, and a regional war would result in a 25 percent loss of the ozone layer over 12 years.

Smoke will block the sun’s rays at first, but over the following years the planet will suffer even more from stronger flashes of ultraviolet radiation, from which the ozone ball previously saved.

The loss of ozone will be facilitated both by the initial explosion as a result of chemical reactions with nitrogen oxides, and by the smoke itself due to heating and a decrease in photochemical reactions.

The consequences can be different – from the increase in skin cancer to the destruction of agricultural crops and entire ecosystems.

Wherein it will be impossible to adapt to new conditions… Along with the dispersal of smoke, ultraviolet radiation will increase, which will have a completely different impact on humans and the environment, writes sciencealert.com.
