Archaeologists find tomb of medieval hipster warrior

Archaeologists l’Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments (BLfD) made an unusual discovery in an old crater. Called Nördlinger Ries, the hole is in Bavaria, Germany. When excavating the surrounding area, experts found two burials, one of which belongs to one man and the other to a woman. A priori, the two tombs are nothing extraordinary, but the funerary objects they contain are to say the least curious.

An archaeologist digs up the head of a skeleton.

Archaeologists suggest the graves date back to 1,500 years, either 6th century. The population of the time followed the contour of the central depression of the crater to build a village that stretched over 1 km. Experts have found the graves where this ancient village stood. BLfD archaeologists detailed their findings via a press release.

A warrior who took care of his physical appearance

In the first tomb, archaeologists unearthed a man aged 40 to 50 when he died. He was buried with a horse and weapons, including a spear, a long sword, a shield and a battle ax.

If it is based on this discovery, the hipster subculture of the 21st century would have originated in medieval times. In fact, German archaeologists also discovered a carved ivory comb. According to them, the warrior used it to maintain his beard.

In addition, the comb presented even more striking details: patterns describing a hunting scene, which is unusual for the 6th century. Combs are not uncommon in tombs from the Middle Ages. On the other hand, such distinguished combs are.

After carrying out a series of analyzes, archaeologists concluded that the warrior was a rich and important man.

a mysterious ceramic bowl

In the second burial, German archaeologists unearthed a woman who had between 30 to 40 years old when he died. She was buried with splendid objects like jewelry and a weaving sword. However, it is a red ceramic bowl which has attracted the most attention of researchers. He had a mediterranean style and was in excellent condition. According to experts, the object would come from present-day Tunisia (North Africa).

The bowl had patterns on its base: a cross surrounded by marks. Archaeologists believe that the marks designate the owner’s name or some magic symbols. However, in order to be able to provide more details, they will have to carry out additional analyzes.

According to BLfD general curator Mathias Pfeil, the ivory comb and the bowl were objects of great value at that time.
