Not in great shape at Meta right now. The parent company of WhatsApp and Instagram is indeed experiencing a hell of a tumble in the stock market, causing thousands of layoffs, and this is probably not going to go away. But that’s not the only bad news for the group, since Reuters and The Verge claim to know from a reliable source that several branded products have just been abandoned internally. Which is reminiscent of the end of smartphones equipped with the proprietary operating system facebook home…
To begin with, it is the Portal range which would thus put the key under the door, which also suggests a fairly cautious public for the sake of confidentiality following the accusations made against Mark Zuckerberg’s company in the matter. Under this name hides a whole collection ofvoice assistants in different forms, from the simple TV camera to real Nest Hub competitors.
The Portal Plus, for example, offers a large fourteen-inch diagonal with a twelve-megapixel sensor at 299 euros, integrated Alexa, in addition to other apps like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Deezer or Spotify. Even better: by limiting itself to ten inches, users can opt for a smaller model to only 49 euro. Unfortunately, that’s without counting on the millions of third-party services in the App Store or the Google Play Store.
At the moment, Meta Portals are still available for sale in France. But it is therefore probably only a matter of time before the products are officially withdrawn from the shelves. Until then, it is always possible to lean towards other manufacturers. Amazon, in particular, is developing speakers for the connected home with or without touch display and soon compatible with Matter. Among this collection we can mention the second generation Echo Show 8 released in 2021 and compatible with platforms like Molotov (streaming), Ring (smart doorbells) or Netflix.
According to other rumours, it is even rumored thatApple also prepares its own solution. It would be a fifteen-inch iPad with perhaps also an associated speaker, to be able to make FaceTime calls quickly and without having to draw your smartphone. Installed in the kitchen, the device could make it possible to follow a recipe on video without fear of dirtying the slab with wet fingers. Cupertino hasn’t confirmed the case yet.
No Facebook Watch either
Earlier this year, we also heard about a possible Meta smartwatch. But here too, according to Reuters, the project was abandoned. Users can always turn to Apple Watches or the Pixel Watch as an alternative.
