After the end of support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 earlier this year, there are only two versions of the operating system, Windows 10 and Windows 11 (the most recent version, unveiled in 2021). But although Windows 10 is still the most used version of the operating system, Microsoft is already planning its death. And the first step in this process is the end of commercialization.
Today, Microsoft sells both Windows 10 licenses and Windows 11 licenses. But very soon, there will only be Windows 11. Indeed, it is this month of January that the Redmond firm puts an end to the commercialization of Windows 10. This is indicated in a small note, on its website.
“After January 31, 2023, Windows 10 download will no longer be offered for sale”, can we read in it. But beware, the end of the sale of Windows 10 does not mean that this version can no longer be used. Even though the OS is no longer commercially available, it will continue to receive support and updates until 2025, which is 10 years after launch. “Windows 10 will still be supported with security updates that help protect your PC from viruses, spyware, and other threats until October 14, 2025”says Microsoft about it.
The beginning of a transition
In any case, the end of the sale of Windows 10 marks the beginning of the end for this operating system. And over the next few years, before its end of support, Microsoft will certainly encourage individuals and businesses to switch to Windows 11. Moreover, this transition is one of the reasons why IDC believes that a part of the PC market could return to growth this year.

Unfortunately, due to the high feature requirements of Windows 11, many Windows 10 PCs may not be able to support this OS. But for old computers, there are alternative operating systems, including ChromeOS Flex, offered by Google.
