Microsoft is working on Windows 11 SE, a competitor of Chrome OS

According to Windows Central sources, Microsoft is about to unveil two new features, one software and one hardware. The first has the name of Windows 11 SE, a lighter edition of the latest operating system, aimed at schools. The basic idea is to compete, especially in the United States, with Google’s Chrome OS, the software that, on board laptops of various brands, has managed to replace MacBooks from student desks.

The suffix, used in the past for Windows 98 SE, would no longer stand for ‘Second Edition’ but ‘Student Edition’ or ‘School Edition’, fully disclosing the purpose of its development. It is not clear which features will be eliminated compared to the standard edition but it is plausible that the minimum installation requirements will be revised to allow loading even on non-latest generation computers. In any case, Windows Central still states that Microsoft has decided to add a specific product to Windows 11 SE.

The reference is to a low-end Surface Laptop. Sources speak of an 11.6-inch screen with a resolution of 1366ž768 pixels. The chassis will be plastic and will contain an Intel Celeron N4120 processor, maximum 8GB of RAM, two USB ports (one Type-A and one Type-C), the 3.5mm audio jack and traditional connectivity options, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The price should be around 600 euros, slightly lower than that of the Surface Laptop Go, currently the cheapest offer from Microsoft.
