“Absolutely fantastic!”: So the NASA astronaut Josh Cassada comments on Twitter the breathtaking image of the aurora borealis that he took from the International Space Station (ISS). However, the American in orbit is not the only one who has goggled his eyes these days, given that the intense activity of the Sun has generated light shows that have colored the skies at unusual latitudes, far beyond the usual regions of the earth poles.
In recent days, in fact, a sort of ‘hole’ that appeared in the outer part of the solar atmosphere (corona) has boosted the flow of charged particles that form the solar wind. In addition, large amounts of solar plasma were emitted into space during some eruptions that made their effects felt on Earth both Sunday and Monday, fueling the northern lights even more.
As a result, their colored lights have been observed in the UK, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France and even California.
