Compensation higher than 30% for those who win research funding

A 30% increase in the remuneration of researchers who award funding for their projects, such as the European ones of the Horizon and Marie Curie programmes, is expected. This is what the decree-law on the strengthening of administrative capacity in the field of organization of public administrations provides, approved on 6 April 2023 by the Council of Ministers. The rule “is designed to encourage research doctorates to stay in Italy and, at the same time, to attract new ones from abroad. Today, Gant winners can decide to carry out their research project elsewhere, leaving their provenance and bringing with him the financial dowry. The introduction of the law is an incentive to stay in Italy and to attract researchers from abroad”.

The Minister for Universities and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, observes that “The Italian research sector is one of the most precious assets of our country. We can count on researchers who are among the best in the world. We want Italy to be for them an increasingly attractive and welcoming country.For this reason, with the Public Administration Decree-law we have introduced a provision that allows Universities and research institutions to increase the remuneration of researchers and university professors awarded grants by up to 30%. tireless inventors, we have been and will continue to be so in the near future. It is necessary to value the great work of our PhDs, making sure that they can express themselves at their best in their country”.

The decree provides that the economic prize can be recognized by universities and research institutions using part of the same funding that the winning researchers bring as a dowry, without charges borne by the state budget.
In detail, the methods of disbursement of the bonus quota, intended for professors and researchers, even on fixed-term contracts, will be established with a decree from the Ministry of University and Research. The additional fees, observes the ministry, refer to the period of implementation of the projects from which the funds derive and in any case within the limits of the availability of the relative resources.

“The rule – continues the ministry – is designed to encourage research doctorates to stay in Italy and, at the same time, to attract new ones from abroad. To date, grant-winning researchers can decide to carry out their own research elsewhere, leaving the institute of origin and taking the financial dowry with them.With the introduction of the law, however, for the first time, the scholars awarded a Grant would obtain an additional compensation of up to 30 percent, with the aim of encourage their stay and arrival in Italy”
