The national finals of the Mathematics Olympiad are underway

The national finals of the Mathematics Olympiad have begun in Cesenatico, organized by the Italian Mathematical Union (UMI) on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Merit: over a thousand high school students from all over Italy who will compete until Sunday individual and team competitions to identify creative techniques for solving new mathematical problems and devising new proofs.

The purpose of the event is to introduce students to the type of problem solving that a professional mathematician encounters in his work, and to show students a different and more interesting mathematics than that in which formulas have to be applied mechanically. This initiative has been held regularly in Italy since 1985, and is the oldest and most followed of the scientific Olympiads at a national level.

This year around 1,500 Italian schools are taking part, for a total of around 150,000 students who took part in the first phase of the competition, the Archimedes Games. The best six students who emerge from the national finals will form the Italian team at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which has been organized every year since 1959 in a different country, with the participation of over one hundred countries.
