The Mathematics Olympiad crosses the finish line

The national finals of the Mathematics Championships, a name given in 2023 to the Italian Mathematical Olympiad organized by the Italian Mathematical Union on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Merit, have finally crossed the finish line: at the top of the standings, with full points, there it is Luca Sartori of the Jacopo da Ponte high school in Bassano del Grappa, already third classified last year. Behind him, with 38 points out of 42, is Enrico Zonta from the same high school, while in third place we find Matteo Musumeci from the Annibale Calini high school in Brescia. The first of the students is Elena Ghilardi of the Liceo Leonardo in Brescia, who ranks fifth.

The students grappled with 6 mathematical problems of increasing difficulty: if problem 2 allowed 271 participants out of 301 to score points, problem 6 proved to be more difficult, allowing only 74 competitors to score a few points. The top three winners received a prize offered by Huawei, while all those who won at least one medal received math books to continue fueling their passion.

In the same days there were also the finals of the team competitions, which presented problems set in the world of Despicable Me and the Minions. In the women’s competition, the Marconi high school team from Carrara won, followed by the current champions from Leonardo from Brescia and the girls from Magrini-Marchetti from Gemona del Friuli. In the mixed final, however, the Galileo Ferraris high school of Turin prevailed; behind him the Calini high school in Brescia and the Righi in Rome.
