From Gran Sasso Tech 4.0 technologies for space and cultural heritage

Modular systems for micro and mini satellites, a Space Factory 4.0 that integrates the best of digital technologies for the production of satellites and new tools for diagnostics of cultural heritage: these are the first projects born thanks to the Gran Sasso Tech Foundation, the organization that celebrates its first year on 29 May 2023, was born from the collaboration between Gran Sasso Science Institute and Thales Alenia Space (joint venture between Thales 67% and Leonardo 33%) to be a bridge between the world of research and business also thanks to funding from the Pnrr.

“The country needs academic research to meet industrial needs and for models of cooperation to arise from this meeting that favor innovation and training. Gran Sasso Tech tries to respond to this need”, said Fernando Ferroni, president of the Foundation Gran Sasso Tech during the event that took place in the Chamber of Deputies.

Created to facilitate the transformation of the intuitions developed by the world of research into products and services capable of going on the market, the foundation has among the results of the first year of activity the birth of an innovative production plant. It is a Space Factory 4.0 led by Thales Alenia Space with the Italian Space Agency which will exploit the best of 4.0 technologies in the construction of satellites starting from the development phases using the so-called digital twins, i.e. perfect virtual simulations of objects and components, the constant support of artificial intelligence algorithms, up to the production level with 3D printing techniques.

“We are in an extraordinary phase to develop highly innovative technological initiatives and projects capable of activating synergies between research institutions and higher education institutes, strengthening the competitiveness of industrial supply chains”, said Massimo Claudio Comparini, managing director of Thales Alenia Space Italy. Another important objective is the creation of an advanced diagnostic laboratory for cultural heritage with instruments that adopt not only digital technologies but also the knowledge developed by particle physics.
