The quantum communication network in Italy is closer

The project is at the starting line Quid (Quantum Italy Deployment) for the realization of future quantum communication network in Italy: will be part of a wider European network (European Quantum Communication Infrastructure, EuroQCI) and will allow you to protect sensitive data from cyber threats Of critical infrastructure (as hospitals, banks And electrical networks), guaranteeing a level of security not achievable with conventional technologies. The project will be led by a consortium, led by the National Institute of Metrological Research, which will bring together the leading Italian companies in the sector, the main research institutes involved in quantum communication (both for the terrestrial and space segments) and universities committed to innovation and training.

The main players include the Italian Space Agency, the National Research Council, Leonardo, Tim, Thales Alenia Space Italia, the Milan Polytechnic, the Sapienza University of Rome, the University of L’Aquila, the Federico II University of Naples, the University of Padua and the University of Trieste.

The goal of the project is expand existing communication infrastructuresoptical fiber and satellite, ed extend the quantum communication network to the entire north-east of Italyincluding the section of Rome, Padua, Trento and Trieste, which will be added to the already existing one which includes Turin, Milan Bologna, Florence Naples and Matera.

Making use of the laws of quantum mechanics, Quid will guarantee secure communications through the exchange of cryptographic quantum keys, used both to decrypt the message sent through a classic channel, and to alert in the event of third-party attacks: an unassailable encryption system that will allow the sender and recipient to be certain that the message cannot be intercepted. The project will carry out service activities through the development of metropolitan quantum communication networks, connected to each other through an infrastructure that covers the Italian territory, the Italian Quantum Backbone.
