Ukraine, satellites see the flood after the collapse of the dam

Satellites watched from the air the massive flooding caused by the collapse of the Kakhovka dam on Ukraine’s Dnipro River yesterday, for which Russia and Ukraine are blaming each other. Many satellites watched the scene from Earth’s orbit, documenting a catastrophe that has already forced the evacuation of over a thousand people. Among other things, the dam was also used to provide cooling water for the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and it is not yet known whether its collapse will affect the plant’s safety.
Between 5 and 6 June, the eyes of the European satellite Sentinel 3, which is part of the Copernicus Earth observation programme, were focused on the scene: Sentinel 3 saw the spread of the flooding, with the river spreading into the surrounding countryside, allowing to compare the data collected before and after the dam collapse.
Images also come from NASA’s Terra satellite, designed to monitor the state of the Earth’s natural environment and ongoing climate change: the photos taken show the flood waters flowing around the banks of the Dnipro in southern Ukraine.
