Dozens of temporarily unplayable PC games, Denuvo suspected

At the end of last week, several dozen games PC could not be performed due to complicated connections with servers. The common point between all these titles: they are all equipped with anti-piracy software Denuvo.

Many PC titles presented difficulties to be launched at the end of last week, and not the least known because the list is made up of Guardians of the Galaxy, Football Manager 2022, Wolfenstein Youngblood, Planet Zoo, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, Mortal Kombat 11, Total War Warhammer or the latest Tomb Raider trilogy to date.

When you look at it, these games use Denuvo, this anti-piracy software that is supposed to verify the user’s digital rights. The problem encountered here would be a domain name, Codefusion.technology, which would have expired on Sunday when required for the online activation of the titles concerned.

Guardians of the Galaxy temporarily unplayable: Square Enix in the know

This issue was intended to be more notable for Guardians of the Galaxy, the game being very recent (released on October 26) and many players want to discover it for themselves. Users of the title on Steam have expressed their dissatisfaction with this, and one of them claimed that Square Enix support had acknowledged the concern to him in a private message. As a reminder, Marvel’s Avengers, from the same developer, had been released from Denuvo on PC a few months ago.

These access concerns would even go back to earlier in the week. Thursday, a developer of Football Manager 2022 had thus communicated on Steam that the server problems relating to the title had been corrected.

This recent inability to access PC games has raised questions about the relevance of anti-piracy protections, and in particular the Denuvo solution. Among other things, the situation where games can become inaccessible overnight because a domain name will not have been renewed or the authentication servers will have been closed was mentioned. Denuvo is also known to affect the performance of the games it is installed with. Last summer, Resident Evil Village was more playable without this software.
