According to information relayed by The Verge, this improvement concerns both old and new devices. So whether you have the 2nd Generation Beam and Arc or the 1st Generation Beam, you can now enjoy DTS audio. The functionality is also available on the Plybar, the Playbase and the Sonos amplifier.

DTS, a format similar to the surround sound of Dolby digital

If you don’t have a grasp of the various technologies behind home theaters, you’ll have a bit of a hard time figuring out what DTS really is. To simplify, it must be said that this one is a bit like Dolby Digital which it competes with.

With DTS support available, owners of various Sonos products will be able to enjoy surround sound from more sources. Suroud sound on the other hand refers to sound that comes from several different directions. This allows the user to be included and to give him a unique auditory immersion experience. Surround sound is obtained from several different audio channels or from dedicated speakers.

This update post comes just a week after the one made by Disney. Indeed, the American company had announced that it intends in the future to integrate DTS audio into its streaming service. We could therefore see in this new update of Sonos as a desire to better adapt to the market trend.

In the meantime, some users have had the chance to test the new update. However, they reported that Sonos devices currently only support a standard version of DTS Digital Surround. This prevents you from getting the most out of audio sources using formats like DTS-HD and DTS: X.

Other features accompany the update

DTS audio support isn’t the only new option that came with Sonos update 13.4, however. Other more or less interesting features are also worth mentioning. These include the brand new battery saving mode. This is mainly found in the portable products of the brand specializing in wireless multiroom audio.

So if you turn on your Sonos Roam, it automatically turns off the speakerphone after 30 minutes of inactivity. This reduces the strain on the battery and saves energy. That’s not all. By default, the device goes into low power standby mode.

The other feature to highlight relates to the Now Playing screen, integrated into the Sonos application available on iOS. This now includes a brand new shortcut. The latter allows users to reach equalizer settings faster. A new HD badge has also been integrated into the application. This is displayed automatically as soon as the device plays high quality audio.
