(ANSA) – MILAN, 02 DEC – In line with the efforts to improve the security of its members, Facebook also brings Protect to Italy, a program designed for people who risk being targeted by malicious hackers, such as activists for human rights, journalists and government officials. All eligible subscribers will receive a notification on their account in the next few days, with more information and the steps to follow to join.
Facebook first started the initiative in 2018, expanding it ahead of the 2020 U.S. election.
Since September 2021, Facebook Protect has been extended to other countries, with the aim of being available in major global markets. Protect’s purpose is to help the most sensitive accounts, potential victims of independent or state-driven hackers, to enable advanced forms of protection, such as double authentication. This requires the entry of a temporary code received on an app or via text message on a certified number, to be entered during access together with your password. But that’s not all: Protect also provides additional security protections for accounts and Pages, including monitoring against potential hacking threats. “We know that there will always be a small circle of users who will not sign up immediately, for example those who are less active on our platform at the time of communication.
Nonetheless, we believe this is an important step forward for the communities frequently targeted, “said Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Security Policy at Meta, on the occasion of the availability in Italy. According to Facebook tests, in one month, over 90 % of subscribers reached by Protect activated a more secure verification process. (ANSA).
