(ANSA) – MILAN, 03 DEC – Judge Edward Chen of the California District Court has stated that Apple has no monopoly in its smartphone application market. Meanwhile, the company has published the ranking of the most downloaded apps and games of 2021. The ruling, which could be an important victory for the Cupertino giant in the various trials before the antitrust bodies, comes following the complaint brought by the developers of the “Coronavirus Report” app, deleted from the App Store because it runs counter to the group’s policies. According to them, only official bodies and organizations can publish applications that provide information on the pandemic on the store. According to judge Chen, the Coronavirus Report software house did not bring valid arguments to demonstrate Apple’s monopoly position in the iOS app market. Even if Apple is the only one in control of what can be published on the store, the infringement of the rules for developers, and therefore the removal of their apps from the Store, does not imply the violation of antitrust. Meanwhile, Apple has released the list of the most popular apps of 2021, the most downloaded on devices with its brand. The iPhone app of the year is Toca Life World, while the iPad app is LumaFusion. On Mac, Craft stands out and for Apple TV, DAZN. The iPhone game of 2021 is League of Legends: Wild Rift while on the iPad it is Marvel Future Revolution. Among the free apps most downloaded on the iPhone in 2021 there are WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Google Maps and TikTok but also some “new” ones, which we learned to use right before the pandemic, such as IO for the management of status cashback and of green certification, and Poste ID, also linked to authentication with one’s own identity via Spid.
