Instagram, the photo platform owned by the newborn Meta, would have reached 2 billion monthly active users worldwide. The figure would have been unofficially communicated to Cnbc by a group of employees who know the key metrics of the platform. However, they would have asked not to be named because they are not authorized to speak on the matter. Instagram would have hit the figure about a week before Facebook changed its name to Meta in October. It is likely that the company has not officially released the data to keep a low profile after the controversy sparked by the revelations of the ‘mole’ Frances Haugen on the effects of the app on adolescents.
As the Verge website points out, the last time Instagram publicly announced data on its user base was in 2018, when it crossed the 1 billion mark. It would have taken Instagram three years to reach the figure of 2 billion users, the goal is to detach TikTok as much as possible, which passed the threshold of 1 billion users last September.
