(ANSA) – ROME, DECEMBER 19 – The push for digital transformation given by the pandemic has expanded the areas of attack by hackers, now organized into real crime industries. If in 2021 they used more and more ransomware, in 2022 these attacks with ransom demand will be accompanied by cloud intrusions, the exploitation of unknown vulnerabilities in systems, the theft of data from VIPs and the compromise of connected devices such as cars. Putting the picture for the coming year are experts from security firm Yarix urging companies to step up security and “think like the criminals” to prevent attacks.

“In 2022, we expect ransomware attacks based on a four-tier extortion model to continue: making the victim’s data unusable by demanding a ransom to regain access, threatening to disclose the data and make the breach public, threatening to strike the victim’s customers and attack the supply chain, ie its technology suppliers with the aim of manipulating and compromising the infrastructure and the source code of the software “. And data theft, according to the researchers, will remain one of the critical aspects of 2022, with events that will involve top or prominent figures (VIPs, influencers) as they are more publicly exposed, in order to expand the media phenomenon. In addition, with the increasingly massive migration to cloud environments – global spending on these services will increase by 54% compared to 2020, according to Gartner – cybercriminals will increasingly try to log in using phishing emails to steal credentials, but the computing power of the cloud will also be exploited to illicitly manufacture cryptocurrencies.
