(ANSA) – MILAN, 11 JAN – There are 40.9 million Italians who connect to the Internet every month, for a penetration rate of 75% of the adult population. A figure up 6% compared to 2019, but still far from the levels of other digitally more advanced countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

This was stated by an analysis by Comscore, which took into consideration the metrics relating to connections from January to November 2021, recording a greater use of PA and health services online and for young people the ‘appification’ phenomenon, that is a long time spent on apps.

The report shows peaks in Internet use that coincide with the various lockdown phases for the containment measures of the pandemic. A health emergency that is reflected in the new uses of the web by Italians: clicks on portals are growing which, in the pre-Covid period, did not reach today’s slice of the population: the increase in navigation for the Government category; 48% for Education; 29% for that Health.

“Covid 19 has proved to be a factor in accelerating the use of the Internet for public utility functions and in the relationship with the PA, with a more marked impact on mature generations” explain the Comscore researchers. Italians are online, on average, for 2 hours and 37 minutes a day, a figure in line with that of 2020 but up 12% compared to 2019. Higher numbers for users aged 18-24, online for 3 hours and 17 minutes a day, almost an hour longer than the more mature classes, with the over 45s connected for 2 hours and 25 minutes. Most of this time has passed on apps, so much so that Comscore talks about the “appification” phenomenon in the use of the Internet. The top 10 on the Italian market are owned by Meta (formerly Facebook), Google and Amazon, capable of holding 58% of the total time spent online. (HANDLE).
