Canon is just the latest of the major IT companies to experience delays in manufacturing semiconductors for technology devices. The German division of the company, one of the leading brands in the imaging and printing sectors, said it had to eliminate the chips from the cartridges of some printer models aimed at companies.
Although smartphone and computer manufacturers are the most affected by the chip shortage, there are many other segments affected by the low availability of electronic components. Cartridge suppliers are among them. As a rule, the chips inserted inside the refills for printers do not affect the quality of the print itself but are used to certify and validate an original product. And that’s why, not just on Canon printers, when you install a compatible third-party cartridge you almost always get a warning that the replacement is unsuitable. For some models, using a chipless cartridge is equivalent to not being able to print at all, due to the intervention of a software block that detects a counterfeit. In the case of Canon, just accept the notifications shown by the program in use, which warns of the presence of a non-original cartridge. The company did not explain when it will have to produce chip-free refills.
The shortage of semiconductors has already caused a reduction in iPhone inventory by 2021. Some companies such as Tsmc, one of the largest semiconductor factories in the world, have announced major investments to ease pressure on chip supply chains in Asia, with the opening of factories also in Europe.
