To survive on the way to Mars, astronauts will learn how to hibernate from bears

Hibernation, or hibernation, such as it is shown in science fiction films, could be a revolutionary method of space travel

Hibernation is a common mechanism in animals to survive periods of cold and lack of food or water.

Frogs and reptiles in general are very good at this, but bears can become the best role model for humans, writes Phys.

They have the same body mass as ours, and they reduce the temperature by only a few degrees – the limit that considered safe for humans.

There is a problem: if a person spends six months in bed, he loses muscle mass, bone strength and increases the risk of heart failure.

But here bears leave their lair healthy. So for starters, like bears, astronauts will have to put on extra fat before falling asleep.

Scientists want to create soft shell capsules, subdued lighting, low temperature (below 10 degrees) and high humidity.

Each capsule will surrounded by water containers that protect against radiation. The health status of the astronauts will be monitored by on-board computers.

Astronauts who are put into “sleep mode” will cut mission costs, reduce the size of the spacecraft by a third and keep the crew healthy on the way to Mars.

“This strategy will minimize the boredom, loneliness and levels of aggression associated with confinement in a spacecraft,” the ESA said.

This way you can save 30 kg of food per astronaut per week, not counting the risks of exposure to cosmic radiation, as well as psychological and physiological problems.
