Google changes Gmail by integrating chat and remote meetings

'PPP / An Italian Secret', Lucarelli:

Remote working pushes companies to integrate new services into their products. After the arrival of the noise suppression feature on Microsoft Teams, Google has decided to integrate Meet chats and video meetings into its email management platform, Gmail. The novelty is part of a broader update that will see Gmail get a new design from February 8 in the interface via desktop, that is the one accessible via the web.

The apps for Android and iOS remain unchanged, at least for the moment. The announced purpose is to simplify the use of the various tools without having to leave the Gmail screen. For this, a side menu will be introduced on the left to quickly switch between emails and chats, Spaces and Meet meetings. Like the latter, Spaces is also aimed at remote work, as well as training, acting as a sort of shared blackboard, a space on which to paste texts, links, photos and videos, visible to authorized members.

Further news coming to Gmail concerns the “notification bubbles”, which indicate the number of unread messages, as happens on smartphones. Google has specified the timing of the change of look, which aim at a gradual migration to the restyling, allowing you to return to the current one if not to your liking. From February 8, anyone will be able to activate the new layout manually, restoring the classic interface from the settings menu. From April, the switch to the new Gmail will be automatic but you can still go back. From the end of June, the renewed interface will be the only one available, and it will be impossible to go back to the classic one. (HANDLE).
