Long-lived dogs help people beat aging

Princeton researchers have begun building a larger picture of dog aging in the hope that it will help understand humans as well.

One of the most intriguing areas of their research will be DNA analysis of exceptionally long-lived dogs, “super centenarians” of the canine world.

Dogs are of interest to scientists because they experience the same symptoms of decline, including arthritis, dementia, diabetes and more, that humans do.

It has long been thought that dog years approximately equal to human years multiplied by seven, but it’s much more complicated, the researchers now say.

Although people have clear indicators of healthy aging, little is known about the “normal aging” of four-legged friends.

At the same time, large dogs, as a rule, age the fastest – perhaps 10 times faster than humans, while small breeds can live up to 20 years, where the year will be counted as five.

The Dog Aging Project plans to explore tens of thousands of dogs of all sizes, breeds and origin.

This will lay the groundwork for further research on the genomes of dogs and humans that will help improve their health and prolong life, scientists hope.
