The US military has invested in the development of an aircraft capable of sailing on water and under water

Valkyrie Systems Aerospace has received a research grant from the US Air Force to further develop its HoverJet Guardian concept, more like models from science fiction films.

The HoverJet Guardian combines an electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) with a high-speed cruise jet with amphibious and hovercraft capabilities.

How this will work in practice is still a mystery, writes newatlas.com.

The vertical takeoff and landing system works by propellers hidden in the wing holes, like a quadrocopter. They lift the plane into the air, and then a pair of turbofan engines come into play.

This results in a cruising speed of 547 km/h, a transonic top speed of 1127 km/h and a whopping 15 hours of battery life at altitudes up to 12 km.

The military hopes, with the help of private companies, to develop a next-generation VTOL aircraft capable of moving much faster than current VTOL aircraft.
