Hoaxes and misogyny, new TikTok rules for a safe social network

Ukraine, Biden:

TikTok has launched a series of innovations with which it intends to make the platform safer and more inclusive, especially for minors. There are four areas of interest that it has focused on to make improvements in terms of privacy and prevention of online threats: controlling dangerous challenges, approaching eating disorders, forbidden content, monitoring criminal activities. These innovations come in conjunction with Safer Internet Day, the world day for network security, established by the European Commission.

“Self-harm and suicide hoaxes are now being highlighted in more detail in a separate policy category, making it even easier for our community to become familiar with these guidelines,” the company explains. “To help the community understand the challenges and stay safe while having fun, we jointly launched video creators, who invite you to follow four helpful steps when evaluating content online: stop, think, decide and act.”

While TikTok already removes posts promoting eating disorders, it will now begin censoring posts about improper diets as well. A decision taken after identifying the sponsorship of unhealthy diets and behaviors, which can upset even those who do not have a diagnosed eating disorder. Among the “new” hate content that will be eliminated from the platform, there are now deadnaming and misgendering, ie ignoring a person’s gender identity, as well as misogyny and conversion therapies. Finally, the expansion of monitoring on the spread of criminal activities, with the opening of specialized centers in Washington, Dublin and Singapore.

Meanwhile, the company announces that in the third quarter of 2021 it removed over 91 million videos in violation of the platform’s rules, but they represent about 1% of all videos uploaded. Of these, 95% were removed before even being reported by a user, 88% before receiving any views, and 93% within 24 hours of publication.
