Lgbtiq + rights: mission to Spain for the Italian envoy Petri

(ANSA) – MADRID, FEBRUARY 15 – The special envoy of the Farnesina for LGBTIQ + rights, Fabrizio Petri, was engaged yesterday and today on a mission to Madrid, where he met with Spanish public and civil society representatives. A trip made, in particular, with the aim of learning about the work of the International Commission against the death penalty (ICDP) – this being a priority issue of its mandate – as well as to “strengthen” relations with a country that has a “fantastic legislation” on LGBTIQ + rights, explained Petri in a meeting with journalists held at the Italian Embassy.

Among the organized meetings, there was also a “long” and “very positive” meeting with former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who is the ICDP honorary commissioner and under whose government same-sex marriage was legalized in Spain in 2005. “Italy and Spain do not want to segment the fight against the death penalty”; Petri explained. “the death penalty must be abolished for all”, but “it is very important to show the Lgtbiq + communities around the world that there is a sensitivity towards this drama”, he added.

With respect to the general priorities in the field of LGBTIQ + rights, the Farnesina envoy said that, “on a global level”, the priority is precisely that of “decriminalizing” in the numerous countries where LGBTIQ + people are still severely persecuted; an objective that can be tried to reach through “multilateral” action. As for the areas of the world where greater rights have been recognized, the thorniest issue currently being discussed is that of “gender identity”, added Petri. (HANDLE).
