From ‘Turkey’ to ‘Türkiye’, Erdogan changes his name to Turkey

The presidency of the Turkish Republic has launched a social media campaign to change the name by which Turkey is internationally known (in English ‘Turkey’) with the term in Turkish to define the country, or ‘Türkiye’.
The Milliyet newspaper unveiled the ‘# SayTürkiye’ campaign which follows another initiative called ‘# HelloTürkiye’ launched in December when the decision was announced by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The new name “represents and expresses the culture, civilization and values of our nation in the better world”, said the Turkish leader, encouraging companies to use the designation ‘made in Türkiye’ in products destined for export.
The project aims to change the term ‘Turkey’ to ‘Türkiye’ in passports, identity documents, institutional websites and in the international versions of the social networks of Turkish companies. Many official web pages have already changed the name while journalists from the English version of Turkish public TV TRT World have started using the term ‘Türkiye’ in recent weeks.
“We believe it is significant to use the term ‘Türkiye’ in the international arena to further strengthen our country’s brand and reputation,” said Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun who conceived the campaign. According to local media, Ankara aims to officially register the term ‘Türkiye’ with the United Nations in the coming weeks.
