Draghi, ‘for now no sign of Russia de-escalation’

(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, FEBRUARY 17 – “For the moment there have been no episodes of de-escalation on the ground”. Prime Minister Mario Draghi said this at the end of the informal EU council on the Ukrainian crisis. “Basically the situation is that of a few days ago, these episodes that seemed to announce a de-escalation are not taken seriously, so we must remain ready for any eventuality,” he added.

“We must pursue the strategy of firm deterrence, we must not show ourselves weak”, then underlined the premier.

specifying that “the goal is now to get Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to sit at the table. Italy is doing everything possible to support this direction”. Draghi then confirmed that his mission to Moscow is in preparation. “The other aspect of the strategy” on the Ukrainian crisis “is to keep the dialogue open, all formats must be used, NATO, OSCE, Normandy: these are all important tools that must be used”.

“Our unity is the thing that struck Russia most. We could have divided ourselves because, for example, in NATO there are so many countries, not just what is called the West”, concluded Draghi. “We cannot renounce the founding principles of the Alliance,” he stressed. (HANDLE).
