India, murder of Hindu activist triggers clashes between gangs

New flare-up of tension in the Indian state of Karnataka after the killing, yesterday, of an activist of the Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), a Hindu nationalist organization. During the funeral, stones were thrown and some motorcycles and houses were set down. For a month, the state has been the scene of violent demonstrations of the “hijab case”, due to the choice of some colleges to prohibit female students from wearing the Islamic veil.
Harsha Hindu, 27, a tailor in a village in the Shivamogga district, was murdered in unclear circumstances, but his death nevertheless sparked protests, violence and controversy among political forces.
The Karnataka government has tightened security measures and ordered the schools to be closed for two days. KS
Eshwarappa, the state’s minister of rural development, of the BJP, immediately attributed the killing to “Muslim hired criminals” and urged the need for justice. The existence of violent gangs of Hindus and Muslims who periodically clash in the district is known. The Director General of Police, S. Murugan, informs that five men suspected of yesterday’s murder have been arrested, and makes it known that there are various charges of assaults against Muslims and two for murder against the murdered.
