Brazil: Petropolis, toll rises to 182 dead and 106 missing

(ANSA) – RIO DE JANEIRO, FEBRUARY 22 – The number of victims in Petropolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro is still rising: after a week of thunderstorms and consequent floods that have devastated the Brazilian city, 182 deaths have been ascertained so far.

Among them are 32 children, while 15 bodies have not yet been identified. The missing would instead be 106, but the number is subject to constant changes by the authorities.

The intense rains that hit the town last Tuesday caused the worst tragedy in the history of Petropolis, breaking the record of 1988, when 171 people lost their lives to bad weather.

In the last week there have been dozens of mudslides of mud and rocks of varying intensity, which have demolished irregularly built houses in hilly areas at risk, while the overflow of rivers has flooded the streets of the city center. (HANDLE).
