Scholz breaks the taboo, 100 billion for the army

“Germany is on the side of the Ukrainians, therefore on the right side of history”. And now it focuses on safety. In a historic speech to the Bundestag, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced measures that were unthinkable for the Germans until a few days ago: first of all a special fund of 100 billion to strengthen the Bundeswehr. “And from now, year after year, we will invest over 2% of GDP in defense”, assured the Bundeskanzler. It is a turning point in foreign and defense policy, addressed – ironically of history – by the government led by traditionally more pacifist forces, such as social democrats and greens. Berlin disposes of what NATO has always claimed, after years of resistance and fears also dictated by its heavy historical heritage, determining the first real break with Merkelism.
