Spain: inquiries on King Emeritus Juan Carlos closed

(ANSA) – MADRID, 02 MAR – The Spanish prosecutors who investigated alleged tax irregularities of the king emeritus Juan Carlos have closed the investigations still open on the former monarch: this is announced by the main Iberian media.

The decision means that Juan Carlos is no longer at the center of open cases, a situation that could favor his return to Spain. In fact, the father of the current King Felipe VI left the country in August 2020, chased by news and rumors about his alleged irregularities. Since then he has lived in Abu Dhabi.

The reasons for the archive of open investigations are, depending on the case, the limitation of the alleged offenses, the lack of evidence or the fact that the alleged irregularities indicated date back to periods in which Juan Carlos enjoyed immunity while still on the throne of Spain. (i.e. until June 2014).
