Spain: Sánchez, Juan Carlos needs explanations on tax matters

Even after the inquiries opened on his accounts have been closed by the judiciary, the king emeritus of Spain Juan Carlos should “give explanations” to the citizens regarding the alleged fiscal irregularities attributed to him: this is what was claimed by the premier of the Iberian country, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, following the announcement with which the former monarch made it known that he intends to make “frequent” visits to Spain while maintaining his residence in Abu Dhabi, where he has lived since August 2020.
Sánchez made these statements during an informal conversation with some reporters present on the flight with which the premier went to Latvia for an official visit. “He must clarify the information we have known,” he said of judicial reports that Juan Carlos had committed tax wrongdoing (which the prosecutor did however consider not criminally liable).
As already reiterated in previous statements, the premier has not expressed an opinion on the will of the king emeritus to return to Spain.
In his announcement yesterday, through a letter addressed to his son and current King Felipe VI, Juan Carlos said he was “sincerely sorry” for “past events” concerning his “private life”.
