Somalia, famine alarm for worst drought in decade

Aid agencies cited by the BBC said Somalia was on the brink of famine.
At least 4.5 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian aid in the country, struggling with the worst drought in the last decade.
Livestock are dying and the price of essential goods such as food and water is rising, as are the number of people displaced. On the roadsides of southwestern Somalia are the carcasses of dead animals and new camps are being set up for internally displaced persons.
According to the UN, nearly 700,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in search of food and water, and this number continues to grow. There is a serious shortage of water throughout the country of the Horn of Africa, even in refugee camps.
This lack has led to the spike in diseases such as cholera, measles and acute diarrhea. Medical centers are seeing a sharp increase in hospitalizations of severely malnourished children, while humanitarian agencies say there is a huge funding crisis, with only 3 percent of the funds needed to help Somalia available.
