(ANSA) – ROME, MARCH 23 – “A devastating day”. This is how Malala Yousafzai defined the Taliban’s decision to close female secondary schools in Afghanistan, contradicting what was previously established and a few hours after their reopening.
“They will continue to find excuses to stop girls from learning, because they are afraid of educated young people and emancipated women,” the Nobel Peace Prize laureate tweeted. And in an interview with the BBC, the Pakistani activist who was seriously injured in the head by the Taliban at the age of 15 argues that Islamic extremists will continue to find excuses to prevent girls from studying after primary school.
Since the Taliban took power in August 2021, only girls ‘primary schools – along with all boys’ schools – have remained open in most of Afghanistan.
Girls’ secondary schools were supposed to open today, but the Taliban overturned the decision saying that a decision has yet to be made on the uniforms the girls should wear. (HANDLE).
