Kosovo: Serbs denied vote, Belgrade-Pristina tension rises

(ANSAmed) – BELGRADE, MARCH 25 – Tension rises between Belgrade and Pristina a few days after the vote on April 3 in Serbia, denied to the Kosovo Serbs who will have to go to four locations in southern Serbia to vote. In fact, this is what the electoral commission in Belgrade decided last night, in the face of the unshakable position of the Pristina leadership, according to which it is inadmissible to organize elections for a foreign state such as Serbia in Kosovo, a sovereign and independent country.

A Serbia, however, that does not recognize the independence of Kosovo, which is still considered part of its territory.

So far peaceful protests are underway in the northern (Serbian) sector of Kosovska Mitrovica and in other Serbian enclaves of Kosovo, with the Serbian population pointing the finger in particular at Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti, believed to be the main culprit for the sharp deterioration of relations with Belgrade. ‘Kurti, you destroyed the Brussels agreement (from 2013, ed), you destroyed everything’, ‘Stop Kurti’s terror’, ‘We want our human rights’, ‘Kosovo Serbs only believe in President Vucic’: these are some of the slogans on signs and banners displayed by the demonstrators. The Kosovar police, which so far have not had to intervene, are watching over the rallies.

To increase the tensions, the suspension yesterday, and not the removal was specified, of a Serbian judge of the Court of Kosovska Mitrovica, punished with a disciplinary measure for having participated in recent days in a meeting that the Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic had in Belgrade with a political delegation of Kosovo Serbs.
