Ecuador: riot in Cuenca prison, at least eleven dead

(ANSA) – QUITO, APRIL 03 – A violent mutiny took place during the night in the prison of Turi, in the Ecuadorian province of Cuenca, with a provisional toll of at least eleven dead and a dozen injured. This was reported by the Metro newspaper in Quito.

Following the revolt, the newspaper specifies on its online page, clashes took place between rival gangs that used firearms and edged weapons.

In addition, Ecuadorian police reported that there have been several escape attempts, and that prison system officers nevertheless managed to capture 55 of the escaped detainees.

The Minister of the Interior, Patricio Carrillo, announced his arrival in Turi where the situation is still precarious, however, as the mutiny is not yet completely over, with a death toll that could worsen.

Violent acts in Ecuadorian prisons resulted in the deaths of 331 prisoners in 2021, including over 100 in Guayaquil’s El Litoral prison. (HANDLE).
