Lebanon, the UN stops distributing fuel to hospitals

After six months of direct support to public and private structures in Lebanon, a country in economic collapse and where there is a shortage of basic necessities, the United Nations announced in the last few hours the end of the six-month fuel delivery program. to hospitals and water companies to power the power generators, in “one of the largest fuel service delivery operations in the world”.
“We have delivered the last drop of fuel,” said Najat Rochdi, UN humanitarian coordinator. From September to the end of March, the World Food Program (WFP), the UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) and the UN Humanitarian Coordination Office (OCHA) distributed 10.4 million liters of fuel to 350 water facilities and 272 health facilities across Lebanon.
The program was launched in August 2021 to “attempt to alleviate the suffering of people caused by fuel shortages and power outages”.
It was a one-off emergency intervention, funded with approximately $ 8.5 million, donated from abroad for what Rochdi called “one of the largest fuel service supply operations in the world”.
The UN high representative in Lebanon expressed concern about the effects of the energy crisis on essential services and people’s well-being. “I appeal to the Lebanese government to find a sustainable solution to this problem … the most vulnerable people need some form of assistance and protection,” said Rochdi.
