(ANSA) – TIRANA, APRIL 07 – Albania will legalize the cultivation of medical marijuana. This was announced today by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, during the presentation of the results of the “national consultancy”, a process in which the government turned to citizens for their opinion on at least 12 important issues, including also on cultivation or less than cannabis for pharmaceutical purposes. Of the more than 560,000 citizens who chose to answer to the government, 61 percent said they were in favor of “state-controlled cultivation, processing and export”. According to the premier, the legalization of medical cannabis “will open up new opportunities for employment and economic growth”.
The initiative could fuel strong debates, linked to the ability of the authorities to have control of the process.
Albania is considered a country of origin for the trafficking of marijuana, despite the fact that last year there were no cases of large quantities directed towards Italy.
However, analyzes by the Italian Guardia di Finanza showed an increase in suspected plantations of cannabis sativa, with at least 37 hectares identified, the largest cultivated area since 2016. (ANSA).
