Sri Lanka: president appoints economics and finance task force

(ANSA) – NEW DELHI, APRIL 07 – The President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed a committee of economic and fiscal experts who will be in charge of tackling the country’s serious crisis. Among the members of the group, Indrajit Coomaraswamy, former governor of the country’s central bank, Shanta Devarajan, former chief economist at the World Bank and former IMF deputy director for Africa Sharmini Coorey.

A press release from the President’s office makes it known that the committee will have the task “of meeting all the main institutions to evaluate the proposals of the International Monetary Fund to tackle the debt crisis and identify a sustainable and inclusive path for the recovery of the country”.

The protest in the streets in recent days has led to the resignation of the entire executive, with the exception of the President and the premier, his fatello Mahinda. But the anger and exasperation of the deep crisis remain unheard, with thousands of people still on the streets today.

The Indian ambassador in Colombo said yesterday India delivered two supplies of fuel: 36,000 tons of oil and 40,000 tons of diesel. Delhi had announced in recent days a credit to the country of one billion dollars. (HANDLE).
