More than 4.5 million Ukrainian refugees fled their country since the invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, according to data from the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), according to which there are exactly 4,503 .954 Ukrainian refugees. That’s 62,291 more than yesterday’s count.
Europe did not see such an influx of refugees from the Second World War. About 90% of those who fled Ukraine are women and children, and the Ukrainian authorities do not allow men of military age to leave. According to the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM), some 210,000 non-Ukrainians have fled the country, sometimes encountering difficulties in returning to their country of origin.
The United Nations also estimates the number of internally displaced people at 7.1 million, according to IOM data released on 5 April. In total, therefore, more than 11 million people, more than a quarter of the population, have had to leave their homes both by crossing the border to reach neighboring countries, and by finding refuge elsewhere in Ukraine.
Poland hosts by far the largest number of refugees: 2,593,902 according to yesterday’s UNHCR data. This morning, Polish border guards reported 2,630,000 arrivals.
