Pakistan, Sharif favorite to become prime minister after Khan

Pakistani Muslim League (PML-N) leader Shehbaz Sharif is set to become the country’s new strongman after the fall of Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was dismissed Saturday night by the National Assembly of Pakistan, the first head of government in the history of the country to be overthrown with a vote of no confidence. Khan’s departure paves the way for the formation of an unlikely parliamentary alliance that should, as of Monday, appoint Shehbaz Sharif to lead the country that has 220 million inhabitants and possesses nuclear weapons.
Sharif’s first task will be a coalition government with the Pakistani People’s Party (PPP, left) and the small conservative Jamiatul Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F). The PPP and the MPL-N are the two dynastic parties that have dominated national political life for decades. Their alliance of convenience, forged to oust Khan from power, is unlikely to survive the approach of the next election, which is expected to take place in October 2023. Shehbaz Sharif, 70, is the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif, who was three times prime minister. He has long ruled the province of Punjab, the most populous in the country.
The PPP is led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, son of former president Asif Ali Zardari and former premier Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in 2007.
