(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, APRIL 12 – “My question is this: if Hungary has not yet received money from these new funds or the new financial framework, how could it be in violation of spending it contrary to the rules?” This was stated by the Hungarian Minister of Justice Judit Varga arriving at the General Affairs Council in Luxembourg regarding the announced notification of the EU Commission to Hungary on the mechanism of conditionality of EU funds to respect the rule of law.
“The agreement of the heads of state and also that of the president of the Commission of December 2020”, says Varega, has “clearly accepted” that this conditionality mechanism “is applicable only as regards the new multiannual financial framework”. “So in our opinion it is illegal”, “but of course we are waiting for the notification letter and as soon as we receive it we will reply”.
