Ukraine: 91,000 refugees in Italy, 4 regions under pressure

Over 91,000 Ukrainians have arrived in Italy since the start of the war, half of them are women, almost 34,000 are children. And there are four regions are under pressure. To take stock of the reception of refugees is the Head of Civil Protection Fabrizio Curcio, who hypothesizes the need for a redistribution if the numbers were to increase further. According to the monitoring of the Interior Ministry, 91,137 Ukrainian refugees arrived in Italy, 48,817 women, 10,229 men and 33,796 minorsthe cities of destination declared on entry into Italy are confirmed in the majority Milan, Rome, Naples and Bologna. “There are regions under pressure, such as Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Lazio and Campania”, explained Curcio: “Obviously, if we can no longer manage these numbers, we will propose travel. We are always attentive to the requests of these people who they are already fleeing the war, but it could happen in the future that they will be given different territorial perspectives “.

With the Ukrainian decree, the government has foreseen on the one hand an increase in the number of places in the reception system ensured by municipalities and third sector entities, and on the other, forms of sustenance for those who have found autonomous accommodation. 15,000 places are foreseen, different from those foreseen within the reception structures, and the Civil Protection has published on its website a “notice for the acquisition of expressions of interest”, which bodies and associations operating in the reception can apply by 22 April. There is also a contribution of 300 euros for each Ukrainian citizen in possession of temporary protection and of 150 euros for each minor.. The direct contribution to Ukrainian refugees in Italy, the Head of Civil Protection assured, will be disbursed “as soon as possible, at the latest within a few weeks”. In addition to reception and insertion, the health aspect must be considered. The number of Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in Italy vaccinated for Covid is very low. In Emilia-Romagna, for example, the Region estimates coverage of only 10%.

According to Unicef, a total of about 4.8 million of the 7.5 million Ukrainian children have fled their country or are internally displaced: this means that almost 2 out of 3 have had to leave their homes. The war “without a shadow of a doubt will increase the number of displaced people in the world, it is assumed to be around 90 million”, underlined in this regard Father Camillo Ripamonti, president of the Astalli Center, presenting the 2022 Annual Report of the Jesuit Refugee Service : “By mid-2021, more than 84 million people were already estimated against 82.4 million at the end of 2020”. An emergency that adds to the increase in migratory pressure: over 67,000 people arrived in Italy from the various Mediterranean routes in 2021, double the number compared to the previous year. “Even today – highlights the Astalli Center – about two out of three migrants are housed in the Cas, the extraordinary reception centers designed to cope with the arrival of large numbers”.
